Yes.
Yes. Your physical passport was required for entry to the Forbidden City and Great Wall tours; guests without it couldn't take part. Keep it with you at all times, never pack it in checked luggage, and carry a photocopy and a photo on your phone. If you recently renewed your passport, bring both.
